A Cork barber is running a series of Pints & Ponytails events, which are designed to help dads in Ireland master the art of doing their daughters’ hair.
Ciarán O’Sullivan, who is better known as Kiwi, is originally from Glengarriff and is the owner of Kiwi Cuts, which offers private bookings, education and his own Celtic Strand product range. He began his career at Wayne Lloyd’s salon in Ballydehob, before going on to open his own business.
Describing Pints & Ponytails as a ‘men’s shed for millenials’, the 28-year-old says that the workshops are as much about mental health and community as they are about the practical skills needed to create everything from the basic ponytail to more complex braids.
“It’s a simple concept focused on giving dads practical skills, confidence and a space to engage – and the response speaks for itself,” he said.
Professional mannequin heads with real hair are used at the events, to allow dads to practise. Participants also receive a QR code linking to pre-recorded tutorials so they can continue practising the styles at home.
An upcoming Cork session is already sold out, with the next ones taking place in July in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.
