Warning issued over 'Barbie drug' tanning aids

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has issued a warning over the serious health risks linked to dangerous and illegal tanning aids that are being targeted at young people online.

The products, which include tanning injections, drops and nasal sprays, contain an unregulated substance called Melanotan II, also known as the 'Barbie drug'.

Due to grave concerns about its safety, this substance is banned in multiple countries, including Ireland, the US, the UK and Australia.

The HPRA, which has seized large quantities of the product this year, has warned that online ads for products containing Melanotan 2 are targeting young people on social media by using bright colours, flavours and branding. It shut down over 500 pages and listings related to Melanotan 2 products between July 2022 and June 2023.

“As it is intended to be inhaled or injected, it cannot be classified as a cosmetic because it results in an action within your body,” said Grainne Power, director of compliance with the HPRA. “We urge consumers to carefully consider and question both what they are seeing online and the motivation of the individuals who profit from the sale and promotion of this substance.

“A substance like Melanotan 2 poses a threat to someone’s health. There is no safety data to support its use, with no guarantees as to its quality, safety or effectiveness. If products advertised online seem too good to be true, it is likely that they are. Serious side effects of taking Melanotan 2 include the development of new moles, darkening of existing moles and freckles, potential loss of vision, muscle tremors, stroke and anaphylaxis.”

CEO of tanning brand Bellamianta Linda Stinson has joined the HRPA in denouncing these products.

“Nasal tanning sprays laced with Melanotan 2 are a shortcut to disaster,” she said. “You can enjoy the confidence of a glow without cutting corners that pose a risk to your health. Topically applied tanning products change the colour on the outer layer of your skin, so they don’t sink into your blood stream, and are thoroughly tried and tested.”
