Make-up artist Jessy Malone won Make-up Artist of the Year, sponsored by EVAGARDEN, which is distributed in Ireland by Aspiring Wellness Ireland, and she answers our questions.
Tell us about your career journey to date?
I’ve been a professional makeup artist for over 10 years, and it’s been an amazing journey. What started as a passion for make-up quickly became a career that I genuinely love. Over the years I’ve invested in continuous training, developed my own style, and have had the privilege of working with hundreds of wonderful clients for weddings, special occasions and photoshoots. Every client has taught me something, and I’m so grateful that my passion has grown into a successful business doing what I love every day.
What have been the highlights/moments you are most proud of?
Winning Makeup Artist of the Year has definitely been one of the proudest moments of my career. It was such an honour to be recognised alongside so many talented professionals. I’m also incredibly proud of building a loyal client base over the years, with so much of my business coming from repeat clients and recommendations. That trust means everything to me.
What do you love most about the industry?
The best part of my job is making people feel confident and beautiful. Make-up isn’t about changing someone – it’s about enhancing what makes them unique and helping them feel like the best version of themselves. I also love how creative the industry is; trends are always evolving, so there’s always something new to learn and be inspired by.
Are there challenges in the industry and how can they be overcome?
The industry moves so quickly, so it’s important to keep learning and adapting. Social media can also create unrealistic expectations, so I believe it’s our responsibility as make-up artists to educate clients and promote realistic, confidence-boosting, beauty rather than perfection. Supporting each other within the industry and continuing to invest in education helps raise standards for everyone.

What traits do you think are most important in order to thrive in the industry?
Passion, professionalism and consistency are essential. You also need patience, creativity and excellent communication skills. Building trust with clients is one of the most important parts of the job. When people know they can rely on you, that’s what creates long-lasting relationships and a successful business.
Were you surprised to win a Beauty, Hair & Spa Award, and what does winning mean to you?
I was genuinely surprised and absolutely delighted to win Make-up Artist of the Year. It’s an incredible feeling to have my work recognised after more than 10 years in the industry. Winning this award has given me even more confidence in what I do and motivates me to keep striving for excellence. It’s also a huge thank you to my amazing clients, because without their support and trust, this wouldn’t have been possible.
What advice would you give anyone who is thinking about entering next year’s Beauty, Hair & Spa Awards?
Definitely go for it! Don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Be proud of your work, tell your story honestly and put yourself forward. Entering gives you the chance to reflect on how far you’ve come, and winning can be an incredible boost both personally and professionally. You never know where it might lead.
